I thought I was just a temporary woman in a billionaire's world-useful, replaceable, easy to discard. So when he publicly chose another woman, I signed the papers, walked away, and swore I'd never beg again. But the contract I thought was a simple deal was hiding something else... a marriage clause, a will condition, and a truth he never told me: he didn't leave because he stopped loving me-he left because someone wanted me erased.

Too Late Mr Billionaire Chapter 1 The Offer

Nia POV

The eviction notice was still warm in Nia's hand when the black car pulled up.

She stood on the cracked steps of her apartment building, reading the same three lines for the fourth time. Final notice. Seven days. Removal of all property. She had folded and unfolded the paper so many times that the crease had softened. Behind her, the hallway smelled like bleach and someone else's cooking. In front of her, a driver in a gray suit stepped out and opened the rear door as she had expected.

Nia folded the paper before he could see it. Her rent was three months behind. The diner had cut her shift twice in six weeks. The last stable thing in her life was a job that barely covered groceries, and now even that was slipping through her fingers.

"Nia Vale?"

She tucked the notice into her back pocket. "Who's asking?"

"Mr. Hayes requests your presence." The driver gestured to the leather interior. "He asked me to say it's a private matter. And that it pays."

The word pays landed somewhere low in her chest. She hated that it landed at all. She had spent her whole life refusing charity, refusing pity, refusing the quiet humiliation of being helped. Pride was the only thing she owned outright. Pride and a debt she couldn't outrun.

"I don't know Mr. Hayes."

"You don't have to," the driver said. "He knows you."

She should have walked inside and shut the door. Instead, she looked at the notice in her back pocket, at the number at the bottom, at the seven days. Then she looked at the car.

"Thirty minutes," she said.

The interior was cold and quiet, the kind of quiet that cost money. Leather seats. Tinted glass. A faint scent of cedar and something clean. A woman sat across from her in a navy blazer, tablet in hand, smile perfectly calibrated.

"Ms. Vale. I'm Ms. Evelyn, Mr. Hayes's representative. Thank you for coming."

"I haven't agreed to anything."

"You haven't heard anything yet." Ms. Evelyn slid a folder across the seat. "Temporary work. Six months. Strict confidentiality-no discussing your role, your location, or your employer with anyone outside a select circle. In exchange, the compensation is significant."

She named a number. Nia's throat went dry.

"That's not a salary," Nia said. "That's a mistake."

"It's not a mistake."

"For what? Cleaning? Filing?"

Ms. Evelyn's smile didn't move. "For being present. For attending events. For following the terms of the agreement exactly as written. Nothing more, nothing less."

"Being present," Nia repeated. "That's a polite way of saying something I'm going to hate."

"Mr. Hayes is a private man. He values discretion." She paused. "He also values results."

Nia turned the folder over but didn't open it. "Why me?"

"Mr. Hayes was specific."

"That's not an answer."

"That's the answer I have."

Nia almost laughed. She'd spent four years being nobody's first choice-passed over for promotions, left behind by a mother who disappeared, dropped by people who decided she was too much work. Now a billionaire she'd never met wanted her specifically. It should have felt like a lifeline. It felt like a hook.

"I need to see the terms," she said.

"Of course." Ms. Evelyn opened the folder herself, turning it toward Nia. "Page one."

Nia's eyes moved down the page-liability, confidentiality, indemnity-until they stopped.

Her name was already there.

Not just her name. Her full name, middle included. Her date of birth. Her mother's maiden name in the emergency contact field, as if the contract had been drawn up years ago and simply waited for her to catch up.

"What is this?" Nia's voice came out thinner than she wanted. "I just got here."

"Mr. Hayes prepares thoroughly."

"Thoroughly?" She looked up. "This is my life in a folder I haven't agreed to open."

Ms. Evelyn folded her hands. "The agreement is standard for the position. The pay is real. The confidentiality is absolute." She tilted her head. "The only question, Ms. Vale, is whether you'd like to hear the rest."

Nia looked down at her name again. Printed, not written. Permanent, not provisional. Someone had known she'd say yes before she'd said a word.

"Start reading," she said.
