Rita immediately took off her blindfold, only to be met with Ethan's sneer.

He was leaning against the sofa. He had slightly long hair and sharp eyebrows, and his narrow eyes were as deep as the night. He had a chiseled face and thin lips, which made him remarkably attractive. Although he looked very handsome, Rita somehow found him to be cold and unapproachable.

Moreover, it had been five years since they had last met, so Ethan's mature appearance came as a surprise to her. Her heart almost skipped a beat when she finally saw him. However, she immediately lowered her gaze, revealing her thick long lashes. She looked breathtakingly beautiful.

But then, when she finally looked him in the eye, she didn't feel any joy. In fact, she could only feel contempt towards him. "You are quite happy to bully me like that, aren't you?" she asked.

With a crooked smile, Ethan straightened himself up and approached her with a powerful gaze. He lifted her chin with his index finger and whispered, "You're right. Nothing brings me more joy than bullying you."

Ethan's eyes were blazing with a mysterious sense of pleasure. He looked like the devil himself—cold, bloodthirsty and ruthless.

Rita sneered and said, "I never thought the day would come when the poor boy unexpectedly becomes one of the most powerful men in the city. I know it wouldn't have been easy for you to achieve such success in a short time. How many women did you have to sleep with to get to the top, hmm?"

She intended to provoke him with her words, and she didn't regret saying that. Ethan's cold stare spread a chill through the room.

When Michael saw that, he immediately left the private room, accompanied by the twenty other men. The moment Michael closed the door, Ethan brought his hand to her neck and choked her.

"Rita, you know very well about my power, so you shouldn't try your luck at provoking me. One of these days, I might not be as kind to you as I am now. With my power, I can make your family vanish in the blink of an eye!"

Being a stubborn woman, Rita was not ready to admit her defeat just yet. "All you can do is intimidate me with your power, isn't that right?" she asked.

Much to her surprise, he grinned devilishly in response to her question and tightened his grip around her neck. "Power is all that matters. Besides, this is just payback for what you did to me five years go. And I'm only just getting started," he said wickedly.

'Five years ago...'

Those words kept ringing in her mind and a sense of sadness clouded her features. By then, most of her anger had faded.

Yes, she had hurt him five years ago.

"Don't try to put on a fake show of sadness, I am sick of it,"

Ethan said bluntly, annoyed by her saddened face. He eased his grip on her neck, and loosened his tie.

Her back hit the corner of the tea table, making her grimace in pain. However, that pain was nothing compared to the pain she felt in her heart.

Rita slumped to the floor with a bitter smile. As she met his gaze, her eyes were filled with sorrow. Fighting back her tears, she said, "You're sick of me? Do you really think you're better than me? You think you know everything, but in reality, you know nothing!"

It almost seemed as if Rita had been suppressing all her pain. She pushed everything on the tea table away, warm tears trickling down her cheeks. The wine bottle fell to the floor with a loud crash, shattering into pieces.

She stood up and held onto the sofa as she walked towards him, her feet trembling. Her dress was stained from the wine and her cheeks were wet with tears. She poked his shoulder and said, "All you know is that I left you. But do you know why I did it?

Has that question ever crossed your mind? You're such an idiot, Ethan. You don't know why I left you. Believe me, I had no choice!

I

know you were so hurt that you had to leave the country. But did you ever think of how my life would be here? Didn't it ever occur to you to investigate the reason behind me leaving you? You didn't care at all!

You never knew the truth, and now, after returning home, the first thing you do is find a bunch of men to humiliate me! Don't you have a conscience? I'm so blind that I still love you after all these years! I hate you, Ethan. I hate you for being such a monster!"

After she had screamed her heart out, Rita's tears finally stopped. Her eyes were red from all the crying and her lips were still trembling. She stared at him for a few seconds, before she lowered her head and smiled bitterly.

She even let out a small self-mocking laugh. However, her heart was torn apart.

Her thick raven hair fell, covering her face. It was almost impossible to read her expression. "I'm stupid. Why did I even say that to you? You don't care at all, do you? All you did was think of a way to get your revenge and bully me. I can't possibly expect you to understand and act reasonably, can I?

I hate you. We will never see each other again," she whispered in his ear. She gave him a pat on his back and was about to leave, but he grabbed her waist with a strong grip and pulled her closer.

This time, when he looked at her, his dark eyes shone like the starry night sky. "Why did you leave me?" he asked.

Although she turned around and smiled charmingly, her gaze seemed distant and cold. "What's the point in talking about it now?" she asked.

"The point is that I want to know.

Tell me everything you had gone through and don't leave anything out," he growled, his dark eyes blazing like fire. Ethan tightened his grip on her arm, almost crushing her bones.

Rita finally couldn't hold it back anymore. Sobs wracked her body, and her forehead creased. "It was because of my brother, Rex!

You know that he was always in poor health. That year, his condition got worse and we had to get him immediate medical attention. He was mentally ill and we had to take care of him day and night.

However, my father never cared about his condition. In fact, he saw that grave situation as an opportunity to force me into leaving you. It was either that, or to watch you and my brother die.

If that weren't the case, I wouldn't have left you at all. Why else would I have left you?

But you never even thought about that, did you? You just assumed I left you for a rich businessman. You thought I left you because you were poor. You couldn't possibly imagine how torn up I was about it. You're a jerk. You keep hurting me, and I hate you for that!"

Rita was so furious that she wanted to pull her hand away from his grip and run, but he held her even tighter, pulling her up against his body.

"I'm so sorry you had to go through all that," he said in a low voice.

Ethan was an orphan who had been adopted by the Bai family when he was young. Soon, he had madly fallen in love with Rita and they had both promised to marry each other in secret. But then, she had mysteriously started dating a rich man and insulted Ethan by calling him a poor boy with a taste in fine meat. Unable to take it any longer, Ethan had fled the country, after taking a vow to come back for revenge as soon as he became successful.

Now that he had finally learned the truth, Ethan realized that his assumptions had been wrong all along.

He held her tightly and said with the utmost sincerity, "I'm really sorry."

Tears started pouring down Rita's cheeks as she punched him on his chest. "Let go of me! You jerk! Let me go," she cried.

How could he let go of her after knowing the truth? He held the back of her neck and kissed her passionately. He then withdrew just a few centimeters away and whispered, "Don't you dare push me away!"
