The taxi drive smiled at Emily. "Are you afraid of the person or do you feel guilty toward that person?"

Emily closed her eyes. "I love that man very much. But now, all I feel is guilt with him around."

She suddenly thought of her father.

When she was in her most helpless situations, her father would always be there to help her.

When she was still in the orphanage, she was bullied by a group of children around her age. Back then, her father appeared and took her away from the orphanage.

When she came to her new home, her new mother didn't treat her kindly. Every time her father left, her mother would lock her inside the storage room. Her older sister would bully her. Everything their father gave her, her older sister would take away from her.

Emily endured everything her sister and mother dealt her because she didn't want to cause any problems to her father. Every time she saw his loving smile when he came back home, she would forget all the painful things she suffered throughout the day.

Back at present, she asked the gentle old taxi driver, "What do you think I should do?"

Guilt was eating her up. How could she face her father now?

The driver smiled at her kindly. "Young lady, I think you should be truthful to yourself first. Only you would know what is really holding you back from facing the person you love the most. You have to know yourself first."

Sometimes, people fall into darkness and let it consume them. They thought it would be impossible to get out of it, just like Emily. But hearing the driver's wise words had lent Emily a small hope.

Suddenly, there was a ray of light that pierced through her darkness. It wasn't so bleak after all. A faint smile appeared on her face. "Thank you. I know what to do now."

"You're welcome," the driver answered with a smile.

"Can you take me to the hospital?"

"No problem!"

Soon, the car arrived at the hospital. After saying goodbye to the driver, Emily got out of the car and walked into the hospital.

She came to her father's ward and hesitated before the door. Taking a deep breath, she gathered her courage and knocked on the door.

"Who is it?" Emily recognized Flora's shrill voice.

Her heart skipped a beat. What was her sister doing inside her father's ward?

The next thing she knew, her heart grew heavier. She couldn't help but clench her fists. Her sister must have run off to tell their father about what happened. What should she do now?

Finally, she bit the bullet. "Dad, it's me," Emily said in a low voice.

"Come in," David hollered through the door. Emily could hear the big smile on her father's face.

"Dad…" She pushed the door open and was stunned at what greeted her. Flora and Ryan were inside the room. Ryan was playing chess with her father and Flora was peeling an apple. The peel broke off from the fruit and Flora turned her blank stare into a glare.

"Ryan." Emily greeted politely. Ryan then placed his chess piece down and smiled at Emily.

David looked too absorbed on their game of chess to acknowledge her daughter's presence.

The atmosphere inside the room turned weird. Emily stood awkwardly by the door, not knowing what to do.

"Emily, go and get a glass of milk for Dad," Flora ordered. Her voice was colder than the winter breeze.

"Alright." Emily made a move to turn around and leave.

Still engrossed in their game, David waved his hand off. "Don't worry about it, girls. I need to focus on beating Ryan first. I'll eat and drink later."

"Then I'll be the one to drink the milk," Flora cut in. Emily lowered her eyes dejectedly and went out of the room.

After a while, Flora put the apple she was peeling down and followed Emily.

From his seat, Ryan sensed something wrong.

After pouring milk into a glass, Emily made her way back to the ward. On her way, she came across Flora, who then pulled her aside. "You know what you've done. How dare you show up here after everything?"

"I'll tell father everything. I'll find a way to solve the problem with Edward myself." Emily brushed past Flora and walked towards the room again.

But Flora couldn't be stopped. She pulled Emily back and angrily said, "Don't you think you've done enough harm to this family? Dad's condition had just improved. And now you're going to tell him you're with Edward?

Do you really want to kill him?"

"Of course I don't want to upset Dad!" Emily had always been the obedient one in their family. She never talked back like this. Flora was stunned.

After a few seconds of silence, Emily nodded imperceptibly and said, "Thanks for not telling Dad yet."

Flora had always hated her. She would always find a way to pick on Emily but strangely enough, she didn't expose her this time around.

"I'm not as crazy as you think. If Dad knew about your relationship with Edward, he might have a heart attack. I'm warning you. You better not upset Dad. And even if I don't tell Dad about your scandal, I can't promise I'll keep my mouth shut around Ryan," Flora warned.

Flustered, Emily bit her lips and looked at Flora nervously.

Ryan trusted her so much. The last person she wanted to lie to was him. But she didn’t have courage to tell him the truth yet.

"You hussy! You aren't satisfied with Edward; you had to hook up with Ryan, too. You don't deserve to be with someone like Ryan at all," Flora said angrily.

"There's nothing going on between us. I just admire him," Emily answered back. She only wanted to keep as much dignity as she could in front of Ryan.

"Once Ryan discovered your true colors, he would hate you as much as I do." And with a snort, Flora left Emily alone on the hallway.

Unbeknownst to them, a figure listened to their conversation. Flora bumped into him and because of the lighting in the hallway, she couldn't see the expression on his face.

She only heard his magnetic voice say, "Emily is not the person you described at all!"

Flora was stunned. She quickly stepped back and answered Ryan, "You're being ridiculous. You don't know what's going on or else you would have known how accurately I described her. You're just blindly in love with her now. You want to know the truth? Emily here revealed all confidential information of the Mu Group to Edward. So yes, she was the reason why our company went bankrupt. And as if that wasn't enough, she's in a relationship with Edward now!"

"If she really betrayed your family, where is your evidence then?" Ryan asked coldly.

Flora was flabbergasted. How dare he answer back?! "If I had any evidence, I would have sent her to prison already."

Ryan ignored Flora's statement. "As far as I know, Emily works in one of Edward's companies. And she works really hard. I know what kind of person your sister is."

"Work hard? She didn't even come home last night. Any guesses where she spent the night? Oh, right. She was with Edward. Is that what you call working hard?" Flora answered back.

A shiver ran down Emily's spine. Flora's words landed true on her weakness as if she surely knew what Emily had done with Edward last night.

All of a sudden Ryan's expression changed. He didn't say anything anymore. He turned his attention to Emily, waiting for her to deny Flora's allegations. She could only lower her head in shame.

"See, it's true. Now you know how she fooled you. Wake up, Ryan! It's not yet too late." With a snort, Flora left Ryan and Emily alone on the hallway. Ryan waited for Emily to deny everything Flora said but she kept mum. Soon, the light in his eyes faded away.

Emily could only lower her head in shame. "I'm sorry. I'm not as good as you thought. What you see is only the good side of me."

Ryan shook his head stubbornly. "I don't believe it. How can you look down on yourself just because of some words from others?"

"But I did sleep with Edward!" Emily squeezed her eyes tight.

"You were with Edward last night?" Ryan asked her softly. She couldn't see it but heartbreak was laid out on his face.

After a long stretch of silence, Emily could only say, "I don't deserve your love, Ryan. I'm sorry."

Ryan stood still like a statue in front of her for a long time. He had never looked as lonely as he did at that moment. With one final look at him, Emily turned around and walked away with heavy steps.

Right after leaving the hospital, Emily went straight to Edward's office.

"Can you let me go?" she asked softly with her head lowered down. She couldn't look at him straight into his eyes.

For Edward, Emily was like a grass. No matter how hard the wind blew, she stayed strong and resilient. She might bend down, but her inner strength remained true.
