Sherry almost burst into tears when she heard this, and Zoe and her mother were looking at each other like they did not know what to do. They had no idea what on earth was going on with Sherry, and the way she was acting was making them a little nervous.

"Stop laughing!" Adam shouted, red-faced in anger.

However, the smile on Sherry's face did not disappear, and she kept on staring at Zoe and her stepmother, as both had stopped smirking and were completely puzzled by her behavior.

"Sister, are you all right?" Truthfully, Zoe wanted to snarl at Sherry and teach her a lesson for laughing, but she had to pretend to be pitiful on account of her father's presence. She didn't dare to cross the line, at least, not in front of her father.

Sherry only shook her head. When her father saw her playing dumb, he was a little suspicious and asked, "Have you gone mad? Why are you laughing?"

He forgot that Sherry couldn't hear him, so he hurriedly told Zoe to write what he said on the paper.

Sherry only glanced quickly at the paper before she took it and began tearing it to pieces, and she did all these with a huge smile on her face.

"You have gone crazy!" Adam was so angry that he did not know what else to say.

A sudden noise came from the door as it opened, and all their heads swiveled to look at whoever opened the door.

Jeremy stepped in and stopped mid-step, conscious of the multiple pairs of eyes that were trained on him.

Adam was shocked. Anna and Zoe stood behind him, looking at Jeremy silently, and Zoe's hair was a mess and her mouth was swollen.

Sherry stood opposite them, but she was facing away from him.

When she noticed that someone had come, she slowly turned to look, already expecting Jeremy, and as soon as she laid eyes on him, the smile on her face melted like wax.

Meanwhile, at the sight of her face, Jeremy was stunned for a while and then a hint of anger flashed across his handsome face.

He rushed into the room without changing his shoes and held up Sherry's cheeks with both hands, as he carefully examined the wound on her face.

"Jeremy." When Sherry's parents greeted him, Zoe also greeted him, but in a much lower voice. "Jeremy," she uttered like a secret prayer.

But Jeremy paid no attention to their voices. All he saw was the palm print on Sherry's face.

"Who hurt you?" When Jeremy's fingers gently brushed on the red lint, Sherry's face tingled slightly.

She turned her head around, ignoring the concern in Jeremy's eyes, and the indifference in her eyes broke his heart.

His gaze shifted from Sherry's face to the faces of the three people in front of him, until it finally fell on Sherry's father. He advanced on him with a vicious expression on his face and asked, "Did you slap her?"

When their eyes met, Sherry's father was so terrified that his heart skipped a beat, and he could not help but swallow his nerves and answered, "I...It was me."

As soon as Zoe saw Jeremy, her face darkened inexplicably, and she hurriedly stood up to explain, "Jeremy, you don't know what just happened. Father was right to slap her! She deserved it!"

Jeremy didn't even bother to listen to her, and instead, he turned around to check on Sherry once again.

Of course, Zoe hated this, so she took a step forward and said eagerly, "Sherry was ill just now and suddenly went crazy. She hit me and bullied my mother. Father can't just let her do as she pleases, so he hit her!"

Jeremy snorted, then said in a low voice without looking at her, "You'd better shut up now."

Like a trained pet, Zoe immediately shut up.

"I warned you that if anyone dares to hurt Sherry, I will not let it go

t any longer, so he strode toward the room and yanked hard on the door. He was met with the sight of Sherry sitting on the bed.

He walked up to the bed and leaned on it, lifting her hair to peer closer to her face, and there he saw the reddened marks left on her cheek. He traced the reddened marks lightly and asked, "Does it hurt?"

Sherry tilted her head to avoid his touch, not bothering to answer him.

"Wait here, I'll be right back." He suddenly stood up and walked out of the room, leaving it in peaceful silence.

Sherry lost herself in the dazzling sunlight reflected in through the glass window, but the sound of footsteps broke her from her reverie.

"Here. Ice your cheek." He had taken two pieces of ice cubes from the freezer, and as he returned to her side, he wrapped them up with a towel and pressed it to her cheek.

Adam kept on insulting his woman, which made Jeremy very furious.

But Sherry, whose facial expression was dull, did not react at all to Jeremy's concern.

"I'm sorry, I'm late. I should have come back early," he whispered softly in her ear.

The sudden coldness that swept over her face chilled her, and she started trembling all over.

"If anyone dares to bully you, I will help you vent your anger. Don't be sad." Very few could understand how it felt to be scolded by their own family members like that.

While Jeremy kept talking in her ear, Sherry suddenly burst into laughter. Stunned, Jeremy lowered his head to meet her eyes.

There was a bright smile on her face that was slowly getting bigger by the second, and for a moment, he was confounded.

"What's wrong?" he asked, puzzled.

By now, Sherry had collapsed into a fit of laughter and she couldn't stop. However, she didn't say anything at all. The whole room was filled with her weak and intermittent laughter and Jeremy's increasingly frantic whispers.

"What's so funny?" He didn't know what happened, so he asked helplessly.

Suddenly, a bleak and sad expression flashed across Sherry's face, which confused him even more.

It was because Sherry could hear now, and it was hilarious and pitiful at the same time. What a good slap her father gave her! She had heard what her family said just now accidentally.

She heard how her father accused her of pushing a pregnant woman, her stepmother, down the stairs, and he was blaming her for her miscarriage.

Her father's slap made her recover. Sherry could hear everything.
