At that moment, the only thing Harper wanted was to escape, not to listen to any explanation. It turned out that Matthew had been involved in everything she'd been doing. In fact, he'd been making a fool of her from the beginning.

"Let me go," she said, unwilling to face him. In her heart of hearts, it had always been Mister Demon whom she could lean on when she needed someone. As for Matthew, she had been hoping to repay her debt to him, and afterward have nothing more to do with him. Little had she known until this day that Mister Demon and Matthew were one and the same person.

"Harp!" Matthew pulled Harper into his arms and held on tightly. "I never wanted to deceive you. But I knew that once I told you the truth, you'd never be able to smile at me again, or trust me. But I need you to depend on me, and truly care for me."

Shaken and distraught though she was, Harper did her best to maintain her composure. "Your Highness, if you need anything from me, you can always just tell me directly. Why would you be so duplicitous and indirect?"

"Because I need you to love me," he protested. "Can you do that? I always wanted to get to know you gradually, so that you'd have time to change your mind. Then I would marry you with your full knowledge and consent. But when I heard that Zack wanted to marry you, I panicked. I was afraid that you'd be very attracted to such a gentle and harmless man, and that you'd be sure to accept him."

Harper stood dumbfounded for a long moment, unsure how to answer. She saw the pain on Matthew's face and didn't doubt that it was genuine. But she still had questions that needed answers.

"Why me?" she asked finally. It was a good question. Someone like Matthew could marry anyone he liked. Harper, on the other hand, had a reputation that was bordered on the notorious. The fact that her last fiance had broken off their engagement w

she began to inch away.

"No, stay," Matthew warned her. "Don't go, or I can't promise I will hold you just like this again." His tone was ominous, and even his eyes seemed to darken.

Harper froze. "Your Highness, it's uncomfortable to lie in this position," she hazarded.

Matthew relaxed his hold on her, which set her a little more at ease. "For days I was worried about you seeing through my identity," he mused. "I feared that you'd never trust me after learning who I am. But I'm looking forward to being able to leave all the deceptions behind."

For a long moment Harper listened quietly, leaning her head against his chest. At last she said, "Your Highness, I'm not a good person. I'm cunning and ruthless. I seek revenge for the smallest grievance, and I try to ensnare others with all kinds of schemes."

"So what? Whatever you are, cunning or heartless, I care for you very much," replied Matthew with conviction. "I fell for you a long time ago. Almost too long ago to remember."

For a while they were both silent together. But then something troubling occurred to Harper. "What's been happening to me?" she asked at length. "Why do I wake up in your arms every morning?"

Matthew cleared his throat, hesitating. "Well, you see..."
