Nathan quickly straightened his face and walked along the second floor's corridor.

Mandy sat on her bed, holding an exquisite gift box. There were a new phone and a preserved flower hidden inside the box. She quickly took out her phone and hid it under her pillow.

Once she heard footsteps coming closer to her, Mandy covered her gift box in silence and placed it on the night table beside her.

The door creaked open, and Nathan's head poked through. "Hey, what do you want to eat for dinner?" Nathan smiled softly, affection sown deep into his gaze. "I'll ask Lillian to make it."

Mandy looked frail as she leaned against the headboard. Her face showed great indifference. In the past few weeks, she hadn't spoken to Nathan, and he had gotten used to it. Ever since the lake incident, their relationship had taken strain.

Although she looked calm and collected, there was a sense of loss in her eyes. There was something about her movements and her gaze that made it harder for him to know what she was thinking. He reached out to push a strand of her hair behind her ear. Mandy didn't dodge.

"I want to take a walk," she said, looking up.

"You're finally talking to me," he exclaimed. His cold voice was coated with excitement and ecstasy. Nathan felt relieved after hearing her voice. Laughter slipped his lips as he gripped her even tighter. He missed hearing the sound of her voice.

"Where do you want to go? I'll go with you," he said eagerly, acting like a dog who'd just been noticed by his master.

"I want to go on my own," she replied stiffly. Mandy stared at him straight in the eye, her gaze as cold as ever.

"Do you really want to?" he insisted. Given her frailness, he was afraid that she might get hurt if she wasn't with him.

"How about I'll think about it? W

man twisting his body across the flowers. He was wearing large high-heels, which didn't suit such a large and tall man.

Mandy trembled with fear, leaning against Nathan's strong chest. Although she still disliked him, she couldn't help but feel at ease with his presence. It had become a habit.

"I'm here," he whispered, tightening his grip around her.

The doctor ushered them into the ward on the top floor, informing them how the most twisted minds were confined in there.

Crying and weeping echoed from time to time along the corridor. Sometimes, someone's singing would emerge from one of the few rooms that they walked past. Just the sound of their treacherous screams sent goosebumps along Mandy's arms.

"Jennifer is inside this room," the doctor said, pointing at a black iron door.

Ever since Jennifer was confined here, Nathan hadn't come to visit. He didn't really care about her at all. The only instruction he gave them was not to let her die. She needed to live to survive a lifetime of torture.

The doctor took out a set of keys and expertly opened the bullet-proof door. "Her condition has been growing worse and worse. Keep a safe distance from her," he reminded.
