LUKE

Six years ago…

I knocked on the door twice before I entered my father's room.

"Dad?" It was his wedding day today, and the ceremony was about to start. The visitors had gathered at the reception hall, waiting for them.

I hadn't seen him so happy. I admit that I opposed the wedding at first, but I eventually understood him. I didn't want his second marriage to happen because I don't want a stranger in the family. But Gene, she was different than any woman he dated when Mom died.

I found Dad in front of the mirror, fixing his tie. "Hey, son. Come here."

"What are you doing here? Where's Gene?"

"You didn't see her?" He frowned. "She went out first to look for you."

"Look for me, why?"

"Darling!" Gene appeared behind me, her voice high pitched. I moved out of the door.

"You were looking for me?" I queried.

She briefly cupped my cheeks, and her tone changed into a low soft tone. "Oh yes, there's something your father and I wanted to tell you."

I raised an eyebrow. "Sounds serious. You even looked for me outside." I chuckled.

Gene walked towards Dad and slid her arm on Dad's back.

"We wanted to tell you sooner, but you were busy, so we kept it from you for a while."

"What's with the suspense? What is this about?" I gripped the doorknob tight.

"You have a stepsister, Lucas, " Dad said, just like a bomb.

I froze. "A what?"

"She's Gene's daughter, son."

My jaw clenched. I scowled. "And you're telling me this just now?"

"We didn't want to lie to you. You said you don't want a sibling and you could accept Gene because she doesn't have any children." Gene's face turned concerned and held on to my father's arm.

"Oh so, you lied to me because of what I said? What's the difference now?"

"I am so sorry, Lucas. I wanted to tell you, " Gene explained.

"But I asked Gene to keep it a secret. It was hard for her too." Dad explained. For everything Gene has done to this family, I accepted her, but I don't think I want a sister nor would I ever accept her. There was nothing I could do about it. I didn't want to ruin a special day, so I'll let it slide. For now.

"You tricked me. Do you know that?" I shook my head.

"Don't talk to us like that, Lucas!" Dad said in a steady voice, but keeping his voice low. "You're not a child!"

"We are truly very sorry, Luke. I didn't want to lie to you, " Gene said.

I clenched my fist. "Is she here?"

"Yes. She's inside. Darling? Come here, honey. Come meet your stepbrother, " Gene called out. "He's the one I told you about."

"Coming, Mom!" A small voice answered from the bedroom. I clenched my fist. What

paused. "Damn it."

I frowned. "What?"

"I still need to find Gene's daughter." I brushed my hair in frustration. "Can you call Minnie again? Tell her we'll be there right away. I just need to find her and then I'll take you home."

"Okay. I'll just call her. Maybe our Carlie just needs to change diapers, " She kissed my lips. "I'll be quick" and then she walked away.

Dad's going to kill me if he found out I neglected his one and only step-daughter. I stood up to look for her. Then, I saw a girl walked towards the reserved table. She was alone. Was that her? I squinted my eyes to get a more unobstructed view. She was looking down at her phone. Another minute later, Gene came to her.

Damn it, it's her. Gene found her, and she talked to her daughter. Her mother kissed her forehead and left her alone again. Gene went to Dad who's already at the dance floor, waiting for her. Geez, Dad's going to kill me. I had to approach her.

She let out a deep sigh. Her shoulders fell. Then, she looked up. I swallowed my dry throat. I gripped the glass tight. She was looking right at me. Our gaze met. Her eyes were beautiful. Her mouth slightly parted.

Where did this angel come from? I

She had the smallest face I'd ever seen, and there's no doubt she's young. I thought she was going to look away, but she didn't.

PRESENT…

Scarlet did not talk to me at all since I took her out of Aries' clinic. She just sat next to me with her face buried on her palms. I didn't notice how many times I sighed. Maybe it was a wrong idea. I shouldn't have brought her to Aries. It would be my fault this time. I thought that he would be the best person to help Scarlet. He helped me to heal. He could do it with Scarlet.

I was no different from her.
