"Why you going along with this, Agent Winter?" He asked her. "What's in it for you?"

"The name's Mei." She said quietly. "Cindy-Mei. And I'll tell you, if you can keep a secret."

She had his full attention.

"Mei." He agreed. "Okay."

"I'm not an agent anymore – I used to be with the CIA, but I finished two years ago."

"You lied?" He said, thinking 'Now there's a surprise!' "But… why?"

"I just wanted to prove something, I guess." She shrugged. "I was here on holiday when the bombs fell. This looked like the perfect opportunity. For once I was in the right place at the right time. If I brought him in I would have proved them wrong about me."

"Proved them wrong?" Beck repeated, "Wrong about what?"

"That I could still make a difference. That I brought him in and they didn't. That just because I became a woman it didn't mean I suddenly became incapable of doing the job!"

"Became a woman?" He repeated, perplexed. "What do you mean? What were you… before – a man?"

Mei sighed. Her whole story – her entire little manufactured reality – was unraveling at a blinding pace. After the first stich had dropped, there was no stopping it. She plunged in.

mile. "Imagine something you keep catching yourself thinking about, something so shocking you feel you need to keep it to yourself – or lose everybody you care about. No matter how hard you try to put it out of your mind, you keep catching yourself realizing you're living life in the wrong gender. The hopelessness, the wasted time and energy, the pointlessness of it all. All the hurt. Life becomes meaningless."

"Was it really that bad?" He asked gently. He was getting an inside look, a revelation. There was a lot of pain in there. She nodded.

"If I didn't become who I am I would've been dead by now. I have no doubts about that."

He got up, went to stand by her. He caught a whiff of her scent. He didn't know what it was called, but it was captivating. Feminine and soft. Like she seemed now. Gods, she even smelled like a woman!
