Lofflin couldn't think of anything to say to that, so he said nothing and simply let Murphy continue in a news-reporter matter-of-fact tone that didn't help his mood much at all.

"There're pieces – chunks of bodies everywhere. Also, blood on everything – the walls, the deck, instrument consoles… dry of course. It's not a nice thing to see on an empty stomach, sir. Even if they're mummies."

"Any idea how they died?"

"It looks like hand to hand combat, sir... but they all seem to be wearing the same uniforms." Murphy said, and paused again.

"What do you make of it then? Mutiny?"

"I dunno, Sir. Sure is a mind-fuck. Sorry."

"Well, we're not here for a history lesson anyway, Murphy."

"Yes, sir."

"A little more mind and a little less fucking please – anyway, maybe we'll find out what happened here while we're looking around. We've also found one by the way... he's been nailed to the wall. Makes a nice conversation piece, maybe an abstract artwork. The lighting could use some improvement though."

"Yes sir..." Murphy said huskily. "I've a suspicion that they didn't kill each other, sir. It can't have been much of a fight – it looks pretty one-sided somehow."

"We'll discuss this later, Sergeant – okay, we're moving on now. See you at the other end."

Lofflin looked poignantly up at the body on the wall, and laid a hand against the metal of the breastplate. It felt cold.

"Sorry to disturb you, no disrespect intended." He said respectfully.

ecialist Mullany looked tensely towards him from the other side of the corridor, looking uncertain and edgy. His knuckles showed white around the flashlight and his other hand was hovering close to his sidearm. Without a word, Bennett complied. The young man looked as if he wanted to say something, thought better of it, and ran the scans again. Better safe than sorry.

"Nothing sir." He reported.

"You sure?" Lofflin asked, noting the expression of doubt on the young officer's face.

"Nothing sir – it must be a glitch with the scanner, that's all."

"What is?"

"Well, the scanner shows no life readings, none at all – but I could swear I saw something flash up a minute ago – and not for the first time."

"What was it? Come on, out with it!"

"Brain activity waves. It looked like it was picking up brain activity."

"No life readings – and brain activity?"

"Yes, sir. Like I said, it must be a glitch."

"Maybe it picked up the other search team? One of us?"
