"The killer was left-handed."

"You can tell that with a medical scanner?"

"As a matter of fact, I can – the angle of the wounds is consistent with a lefty." He said, showing him the display on the medical scanner. "Either he was left-handed – or just very good at stabbing people using his left hand. He's been dead about four hours according to this – bled to death – that's why there's so much of this red stuff all around – almost as much blood platelets as alcohol. The blade cut the spinal cord there... Heart also ruptured, near the aorta. He probably died very quickly, lucky bastard! Dead drunk too. Appropriately. Hmm."

Lofflin ignored the Dr.'s sarcasm, and pointed at the knife protruding from Blaine's back.

"Recognize the knife?" Lofflin asked, indicating the ornamental handle. It was buried up to the hilt in Blaine.

"That's the old thing he used to keep on the coffee table, isn't it?"

Lofflin nodded again. "Check it for fingerprints and DNA."

The doctor produced another device. It blinked and flashed before giving a soft beep.

"Uh-uh. Zippo." Harry said, shaking his head. "There's nothing on this, but Blaine. Either it was wiped for prints, or the killer wore gloves."

Lofflin took a deep breath, held it, then exhaled slowly while rubbing his tired eyes.

"Okay. So he's sitting here – drunk as a skunk. Someone comes in without him knowing – takes the knife off the table, and stabs him."

Collins nodded. "It would have to be a man too." He added. "I can't see one of our women driving that thing into him like that. It'd need too

oth of us." Said Lofflin, looking at him quizzically.

"Well fuck you too, Joe!" Collins grunted, half-jokingly.

Lofflin gave a wry little chuckle. He knew only too well that as Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Collins would have triggered an emergency response alarm and yet another log entry in at least three separate computer systems if he'd used his access code to over-ride Captain Blaine's lockout code. Plus, he was right-handed, and so was Lofflin.

"Well at least you know I didn't do it." Lofflin said. "And I know you didn't do it."

Dr. Collins pondered his statement for a moment, and then grunted.

"Perhaps neither of us should elaborate on that."

"Well, screw you too, Harry!"

"Well, where were you in the last four hours?" Harry chuckled wryly. "Why worry about it, Joe – in a few days it won't matter one way or the other. The killer, whoever he – or she is, will die along with the rest of us. In a few months, or years, or centuries, someone will find us and try to piece all this together – and by then it won't matter."
