"Range two thousand." Hewitt reported.

"Secure all stations." Blaine ordered. "Raise shields. Helm, plot evasive and standby. Weapons, set a spread of three torpedoes at two second intervals."

"Aye sir!" The two replied almost as one.

"Engineering to Captain Blaine!" A tinny little voice came from the com-panel in the Captain's armrest. He answered.

"What is it? Don't you know we're about to engage an enemy ship?"

"Before you engage anything, sir – I suggest you take note of the state of the ionization dampers!"

"They look fine from up here, Mister Billingham."

"Well, I'm sure the Eifel Tower looks great from up there too, sir, even though it was blown to hell in the Big Nuke – just like our engines will be if we're not careful!" Lt. Commander Billingham said somewhat sarcastically. "They're not fine, sir. In fact they're anything but. If you overload the power grid, they'll fail and we'll lose all power. Not something you want to happen in the middle of a fight!"

"Damn it, man! " Blaine protested. "Three months without a kill! We can't afford to pass up a chance like this!"

"Well, what do you want me to do, Captain? Order them to be all right? I can't change the facts, sir!"

"My engines die mister, you're the one who killed them!" Blaine said, just before he cut the circuit. Then the comtech called him.

"Yes, Graham?"

"I'm picking up… music, sir?" said Ensign Graham, clutching his ear piece.

"From the Corsair?" Blaine asked.

"Yes, sir. Uh – heavy metal, I think."

The Corsairs seemed to be real traditionalists. Back on old Earth, sea pirates used to raise a r

ree torpedoes, lock and load!"

"Ready sir!"

"Fire!"

Ka-chunka-chunka-chunka.

"Torpedoes away!"

"Evasive maneuvers!"

Their quarry fired more countermeasures – small low-powered explosive device, essentially anti-torpedo torpedoes, which intercepted the Mordrake's torpedoes, and detonated them. Then the Corsair fired its forward lasers at Mordrake. They were heavy industrial cutting lasers, not the standard military type blasters that could be absorbed, deflected or blocked by shields. Fired at such close range, they were extremely potent. The beams lanced across Mordrakes' upper dorsal hull, punching holes through the heavy alloy plating. The ship vibrated around them as it took the hits. The lights flickered and dimmed before fading back up to full strength again.

"Engineering to Captain!" Came that annoying small tinny voice again.

"What is it?" Blaine fumed.

"At the rate she's fluctuating, we're going to have a total failure on our hands at any minute! You've got to ease off now, sir – if you don't want to blow the works to kingdom come!"
