"Nothing sir." He reported.

"You sure?" Lofflin asked, noting the expression of doubt on the young officer's face.

"Nothing sir – it must be a glitch with the scanner, that's all."

"What is?"

"Well, the scanner shows no life readings, none at all – but I could swear I saw something flash up a minute ago – and not for the first time."

"What was it? Come on, out with it!"

"Brain activity waves. It looked like it was picking up brain activity."

"No life readings – and brain activity?"

"Yes, sir. Like I said, it must be a glitch."

"Maybe it picked up the other search team? One of us?"

"I thought so too, sir – but then I catalogued our patterns and excluded them. It's not one of us. Probably a glitch."

"Probably a glitch." Lofflin repeated slowly, while evaluating the tingling sensation that had started to run up and down his body for at least the second time. ysterious fire in Blaine's quarters could only mean one thing – someone knew they were going to be investigated, and was trying to cover their tracks.

"Specialist Mallet." Said a gruff female voice.

"This is Commander Lofflin." He said. "I wanted to ask you about the fire in the Captain's quarters."

"Yes, sir – I'll have my report sent to you within the hour."

"That's fine, thanks." Lofflin said. "But I wanted to get it verbally first – what caused it, and what damage was done?"

Mallet sighed.

"Umm, okay, sir… I found signs of an accelerant used to start the fire… the scan showed it was degreasing fluid. The affected area was in the Captain's lounge."

"What part of the lounge, Mallet?" He asked.

"The aft side bulkhead, sir." Mallet continued. "Most of the bulkhead was on fire when we got inside... and the small table and chairs that stood against it, the coffee table and most of the carpet in that area. I had to vent the atmosphere to put it out."
