The last day of preparations dawned, and the Undertaker passed all its systems checks. But Mykl knew they were not quite ready. Not yet. There was still something missing. Back on Antares, he went down to the brig.

The man was still sitting on the floor of his cell, contemplating the universe. He turned on the intercom again. The Corsair looked up at him.

"Well?" Mykl asked.

"Do you have any idea what they'll do to me if I'm caught taking spies to Turtle Island?"

"Well, do you have any idea what will happen to you if you don't?" Mykl replied, and sat on the wheelie-chair again. Blachart appeared to have fallen silent, sullen. "Look, " He continued, "You're between a rock and hard place, the devil and the deep – see what I'm saying? If you don't go, well it's pretty certain what will happen... That's practically guaranteed. But if you go – if you go, you may be caught, you may die – but if we're successful, you'll get your pardon and we can all live happily ever after."

"That's a nice pitch." Blachart said, smiling thinly at him. "You been practicing?"

"Well, yeah, a little." Mykl said, shaking his head at the man's chutzpah. "What's your answer?"

"Fine." Blachart said. "Okay, I'll do it. But your side of the bargain better be good."

"It is." Said Mykl. "Just remember – full co-operation. There's no turning back – if you pull out after this, you're as good as dead either way. And no funny business, you got me?"

"On disk, d'Angelo." Blachart said, smiling wryly. "When do we leave?"

Mykl smiled and hit another switch. The transparent panel sli

Corsair home world itself – and Mykl had the man's signature on the Document of Intent attached to the pardon proposal sent through to him by Hobbs to back that up. Did Mykl trust Blachart? Well, let's just say he wasn't going to ask him to hold his shotgun while he tied his shoelaces.

That brought him to Ripley. Saying goodbye was… painful. Mykl realized how much more time he wanted to spend with her… How nice it would be to hold her when he got back! That's if they came back at all. He was determined to come back – for both of them. Hearing her say 'I love you' when they finally parted, was traumatizing. Her voice was a hoarse whisper. It was so… final.

When at last it was time to leave, Captain d'Angelo had placed himself into the unfamiliar command chair on Undertaker's bridge. It squeaked slightly, but at least the entechs had got all the blood out of it. The tension on the small bridge was almost tangible. The silent and sinister Blachart stood to his right side, while his dark new crew performed final checks of their workstations.
