"Stand down from battle stations. All hands to yellow alert." Falcone ordered.

The appropriate notice went out ship-wide.

Then the old man asked her: "How's the patient in Sickbay?"

"Doctor Payne reported just now that he's still unconscious but stable and in incubation."

"Thanks." The old man acknowledged, and sat down in the Captain's chair.

Then, quite unexpectedly, Captain Falcone reached out and laid his left hand on her right. She turned her face toward him.

"Ripley, I've reconsidered." The old man told her.

"Captain?" She asked, perplexed. "Reconsidered what?"

"Go and tell Mr. d'Angelo that I'm reactivating his commission. You did say he's had contact with Corsairs. Tell him he's going to be our…special consultant."

"Really sir?" She asked, stunned.

"Go on." He smiled. "Send him to my office – I'll be waiting there for him."

"Yes, sir!" She breathed and, taking the cue, left. The Old Man was full of surprises.

To say that Mykl d'Angelo was surprised that Captain Falcone had taken him up on his offer of reactivation would be an understatement of note. For obvious reasons, it offered him a welcome relief in his present situation – in one second flat he'd gone from being nowhere and without any prospects, to being in the right place at the right time, with a paying job and something to do.

"What the hell – why not?" He'd smiled at his messenger angel, which bore a striking resemblance to Ripley Jones. "When do I start?"

"Right away!" She said, and literally grabbed him by the arm,

ed in ship-to-ship combat against several Corsair ships. Whether we destroyed them, captured them, or if they got away, the result was still the same – we didn't know where they came from, where they went, or where to look for the rest of them. Like looking for a needle in a haystack."

"Yes." Falcone agreed, "Space is a pretty big haystack."

"Do you have any insight into their tactics, habits, strategy, that sort of thing?"

"I think so, sir. You see, they don't have the sort of ships we have – they started out with having less and inferior than the high tech ships and equipment the Fleet has, so they had to improvise and use their cunning. Most of their ships don't have battle shields because they're mostly old loderunners and cargo carriers.

They also don't have military specification weapons, but mostly old ion cannon and self-defense stuff salvaged from civilian ships in wrecker's yards. Some of them carry stolen slam-torpedoes stolen and smuggled via their covert networks that run right through the Empire.
