It was the second night when Joanne stirred from her slumber gasping for air, and coughing as if the same air choked her.

Mack stood rapidly and knelt before her as she struggled to breathe. "Hey, hey, hey, it's okay, " he whispered rubbing her back softly.

She took deep breaths as she started to calm down. He helped her back on the bed slowly not wanting to hurt her. He looked at him with a puzzled expression. "Have you been here the whole time?"

Mack took a quick look at himself, still in his dusty pants and boots. "I couldn't sleep, " he replied unable to look at her in the eye.

"Forgive me for taking over your room, I'll move to the guest room at once, " she said as she started to gather her robe.

"No, don't do that, " he interrupted. "You'll injure yourself."

She came to a halt and turned to him pushing her hair away from her face. "Then, why are you here?"

Mack felt his throat dry up. He couldn't possibly admit to her that he couldn't sleep knowing that she was in his house terribly injured. He cleared his thro

d the urge to simply watch her, and be by her side in the morning, or if she had another nightmare, he could be there to soothe her nerves.

She stirred a bit and Mack almost instinctively brought his hand to her head and caressed her hair gently. His mother used to do that to him when he was young. She would brush his worries away with her fingertips. It seemed to work for Joanne as her sleeping face relaxed. He smiled. Why did he smile with such a small gesture? He didn't know, but he enjoyed the moment. It felt like if she was at peace, he was also at peace. It made little sense but it didn't matter. He would spend all his nights stroking her head if it meant she would sleep serenely.
