Nicholas waited by the stairs nervously. He didn't know why he was so nervous, she had said yes, and she was quick with her reply, as well, his nerves were uncalled for. Nicholas ran his fingers through his hair. What was taking them so long?

"I can't wait to meet your wife to be, " Judge Connor whispered in his ear. Nicholas nodded.

"Thank you for doing this after such short notice."

"No problem, son. Anything for the boy who used to call me Judge Con, " the big man that seemed too cheerful to be a judge, replied.

Footsteps coming from upstairs, announced their arrival. His mother appeared first and behind her his future wife. Nicholas' breath caught in his throat. Olivia in her white elegant dress, her hair in a braided hairstyle and her dazzling smile made his heart skip a beat. She was going to be his, and he couldn't hide his emotions. He felt a knot on his throat, tears, excitement, slight fear for what laid ahead of them, all in a lump in his throat. He cleared his throat roughly as he held Olivia's hand in his. She was so beautiful, could he have done something to hide his grotesque scar? But Olivia's eyes never left his face, and having a beautiful woman looking at his face with such tenderness made him forget how damaging his scar on his cheek was. He suddenly felt like the most handsome man in California. He looked down at her hand bashfully. No one had ever made him feel this way.

Judge Connor made it quick and Nicholas was thankful. They took turns signing the papers and his mother signed right after them. Not a single word was uttered between them because words weren't necessary. They shared looks here and there, they shared mischievous smiles. The moment was better cherished this way.

They exchanged rings, except there weren't rings. Nicholas had planned everything except for the rings. It completely skipped his mind and he felt like an idiot. How could he have forgotten the rings?

"In the old days, " Judge Connor explained as he grabbed a piece of thread and cut a small piece. The thread Nicholas' mother used to mend her dresses. "Gold bands were

spoke to me about without knowing that you were it. And I love you even more for that. Everything we went through to get to this point, though a cruel joke from someone or something higher than us, I would do it all over again in a heartbeat, " he finished as he tied the string on her finger carefully.

Olivia smiled and wiped the tears that escaped her eyes gently with her fingertips. She let out a small laugh as she tried to hold back her tears.

Judge Connor spoke bringing Nicholas back to their living room, in front of his mother and sisters. "You may kiss your wife, Mr. Gregson."

Olivia brought her hand to his scar and traced it. "I love you, Nicholas, " she whispered. A soft, gentle whispered that only he heard.

Nicholas smiled and covered her lips with his softly.

Olivia wrapped her arms around his neck, she hoped he could feel through their first kiss as husband and wife, that he was her miracle as well. That he was, as her sister mentioned in her letter, her knight in shining armor who came to her rescue just at the right time. Though she never did see herself as the damsel in distress, she was indeed saved by him, and she loved him with all her heart. She traced his scar one more time with her fingertips, as they pulled away, both smiling, foreheads touching. She was looking forward on seeing that distinguishing scar for everyday of her life, of that she was sure.
