A/N: About the YT video: Remember Victor's song before he meets Victoria, the woman he is forced to marry through an arranged marriage (The Corpse Bride)? That was the second I fell in love with the movie! Thus, the beautiful piano music helped me get inspired when i was threatened with writer's block. Enjoy!

The cell was damp and cold. Nicholas sat against the far wall finding solace in the darkness. His body was hurting and the saturated stitches on his arm were healing successfully, but he couldn't move it without harming them. Another scar to add to his collection.

Nicholas felt oddly satisfied, though he found himself in jail for an undetermined amount of time, he was glad Bradford got what he deserved. Even if Nicholas was being accused of killing him.

"Mr. Nicholas Gregson?"

Nicholas didn't move. He saw the short stature man with dark hair grazing his shoulders peeking in through the bars, a young man, probably in his twenties.

"My name is Isaiah Miller, I'm your attorney, " the man spoke with too much optimism in his voice considering the situation. "I wish to ask you a few questions, if you don't mind."

Nicholas shifted but refused to get out from the comfort of his corner. The dark that once gave him fear and distress, was now very well welcomed.

"Shall we start? You were going to marry Miss Mary Clark, but you cancelled the wedding. What was the reason?"

"A personal reason."

Isaiah nodded and wrote in his tiny notebook. "Did it have anything to do with her twin sister, Olivia Clark?"

"It had everything to do with Olivia."

"Ah. You served under General Clark during the war?"

"I did."

"When you returned from the war, did you have any violent outbursts?"

Nicholas blinked at his question. It seemed as if there was no specific order to his enquiries. "No, I did not."

"Mr. Gregson, " Isaiah replied after a few seconds. "You are being accused for the assassination of Bradford O'Brian. You may want to cooperate if you wish to get out of this place soon."

Nicholas nodded. He had been in the cell for two weeks, and now he was supplied with an attorney, it was difficult for him to believe that the Boston police wanted him out. He stood slowly and approached the gate. His dirty clothes, stained with blood, some were his own but it was mostly O'Brian's. "Bradford O'Brian abused his fifteen-year-old niece and got away with it. She was forced to marry him in which gave him the chance to continue his monstrosities, and still got away with it. All I wanted to do was for him to pay for his crimes. And he did."

Isaiah watched him understandingly. "Where is Miss Olivia Clark? If she testifies, it could help us with the case."

"She's in Sacramento, California."

Isaiah shook his head. "Is there anyone who can vouch for what you just said?"

"Her sister."

"Miss Clark refused to speak to me. I don't believe she will be much help."

Nicholas thought as much. "What then?"

"Well, " Isaiah sighed. "The event you have described happened eight years ago, and without Miss Clark here to give her account of the story, it will be difficult to convince the judge. It has, however, been proven that the dagger belonged to Mr. O'Brian. Some eyewitnesses saw when you two struggled and consequently, stabbed himself on the stomach, so you have been absolved from that charge. But, you are being accused of attempted murder. It seems as if you arrived at the Clark residence with the sole purpose to kill him with your bare hands."

"I wanted to scare him, " Nicholas admitted.

Isaiah nodded. "

king on the door but the door flew open, Olivia appeared from behind it, her eyes bright with excitement. Her hair was back in a long braid, she wore her robe as she was ready to go to bed. They both froze. As much as she wanted to jump into his arms, his sullen expression made her think twice. "What happened?" she was the first one to speak.

Nicholas dropped his gaze and extended his hand. She accepted it and he led the way back to her room. He locked the door behind them and invited her to sit on the bed beside him.

"Bradford is dead."

Olivia blinked unsure if she heard him correctly. "How?"

Nicholas spoke slowly. "I went to the farm, I found him sitting at the front porch. We exchanged some words. He made me angry and I hit him. He threatened me with a knife. He launched himself at me and we fought. He was mortally wounded by his own knife." He extended his arm and pulled his sleeve up. He showed her his healing scar, it went along his forearm.

"What happened afterwards?"

"I was accused of murdering him and I spent two weeks in jail. Mary spoke on my behalf which helped with my release."

"I'm sorry you had to go through it alone."

He shrugged. "How have you been?" he asked changing the subject.

"Alright. I wondered why you were taking so long, " she replied as she grabbed his arm gently and traced the cut with her fingertips.

Nicholas found her touch soothing, he didn't want her to stop. "Do you forgive me?"

Olivia furrowed her eyebrows puzzled. "For what? For defending my honor, or what's left of it?"

"I killed him."

"You did not. You said you were fighting and he hurt himself with his own knife."

"He did."

"What were you planning on doing when you decided to stay behind?"

"I wanted to hurt him. I wanted to hurt him more than he hurt you. To make him regret all that pain he ever caused you."

Olivia smiled and leaned her head on his shoulder. "Thank you."

Nicholas kept quiet as he heard her breathing slowly. He had her so close, he could feel her soft hand caressing his arm and he felt he was going to lose his self-control. "I must go freshen up." He stood rapidly and without turning to her, he said, "My room is right next to yours, if you need anything." And he left her sitting on the bed.

He locked himself in his room cursing at himself. There had to be a better way to handle his emotions.
