They arrived late at night, Olivia let herself in without a single word to her sister, they weren't in speaking terms. Mary believed Olivia was to blame for that awful night, and no matter the amount of times Olivia told Mary that it was against her will, she judged her. She was too stubborn to understand. If anyone should support Olivia, it would have been her twin sister, but she turned away from her and refused to look back. Olivia didn't need her petty anger, she already had so much to deal with.

"You may place everything in my room, Maggie. I will be in in a few minutes, " she said as she took her jacket off. "I am going to see my father."

Maggie gave her a nod and left. Olivia looked at herself in the mirror and fixed a stray strand of hair that tended to poke her eyes. She took a deep breath readying herself to see her father. Mary wrote to her informing her of his failing health, Olivia didn't think twice to see him, and if welcomed, to care for him, for she had her suspicions that Mary was simply useless at it.

She found the door wide open and let herself inside. She paused as she found a familiar man sitting beside her father sharing a laugh. Olivia could feel her heart race as Nicholas turned to see her once her father noticed her on the door.

"Helen!" her father exclaimed excitedly. "I thought you had forgotten about me."

Olivia smiled. "Don't be silly." Nicholas stood to allow her to come closer. Olivia was unable to look at him. She felt so ashamed, he surely heard about her marriage, he must despise her.

"I shall leave you to it, " Nicholas said and he excused himself.

"Helen, that was Nicholas, remember I told you about him?" said her father.

"Ah yes, he seems like a lovely man, " Olivia replied looking out the door wishing she could see him again.

"He is, " he replied fondly. "Will you ever be able to forgive me?"

Olivia nodded. "Now what did you do?" she replied assuming he was still speaking to her mother.

"I should have stopped you from marrying that man."

Olivia looked up confused. "Marrying who?"

"Well, Bradford, of course." He lifted his hand and caressed her cheek gently. "You are my daughter, I sho

her arm, more gently, and started rolling her sleeves up to her elbow.

"What do you think you're doing?" she asked frustrated and tried to pull away.

Nicholas came to a halt and became quiet. He stared at her bruised arm, the purple marks indicated her inability to defend herself. She didn't speak, there was no hiding it now.

"He did this to you, didn't he?" he spoke softly.

She wanted to cry, all she seemed to do is cry.

Nicholas held her arms carefully not wanting to cause her more pain. "Olivia, you must get away from him, leave him—"

"I'm sorry, am I interrupting?" Mary stood in her nightgown, arms crossed.

Nicholas didn't look away. He continued scrutinizing her with his gaze, making her nervous.

"I must go rest, " she said, barely a whisper. Nicholas let go slowly and without turning to him, she stood in front of her sister and said, "I'll be staying for a few days to look after father."

She arrived to her room and shutting the door behind her, her legs became weak, she leaned against the door and slipped to the floor. She ruined everything by marrying that man. Nicholas lost all respect for her, if he had any to begin with. And this hurt her more than words could describe. As much as she loved her father, losing Nicholas' friendship was worst. Why was it upsetting her so much? Why was losing him the biggest fear she was now facing?
