It appeared every Christmas Eve, and was gone by Boxing Day. On the mantel stood a perfect miniature house, carved from wood, mere inches high.

But lights twinkled from inside. And leaning close, she could hear laughter, voices, merriment. A family.

'No touching, ' warned Grandpa. 'The leprechauns won't like it.'

Her grandfather worked tir

elessly, but their stockings never bulged. The roast bird was perpetually scrawny and the table set for only three.

'You know it was just a candle in there, ' says her brother, years later.

She nods, but her eyes are on the mantel.

Because tomorrow is Christmas Eve.
