"You're an imbecile."

"Charlotte, " Larson warned. "Keep your calm. There's no need to start trouble."

"He started it, " she said, pointing at the elf.

"Don't be a child, " Garrett interrupted.

"Enough, everyone, please, " Larson said in a strained but placating manner.

"I'm in the guild, amateurs. Guild members don't hide in sewers, they pay off the guard, but, " Charlotte trailed off. She glanced around a bit. There wasn't much else to see; to their left was another set of stairs leading down, but the water was on a platform like an aqueduct, so there was the option to move below without the obstruction of flowing sewage. "If I were fleeing the guard or trying to sneak into a business or home from the sewers, " she reasoned, "I might try to hide behind an area where the water is falling to a lower level. We should go back the way we came, go down those stairs, and check behind the wastewater fall."

For once, she behaved in a helpful manner and actually kept a level head while looking at everyone, and all without being confrontational. "Vote, " she then mocked.

Larson fought not to belly laugh. It still came out in coughing spurts, which made Charlotte smile. They did vote, nevertheless, and agreed to go back, but only after a short respite to eat, drink, or do their business. Finally set to return to the first set of stairs they happened across, Garrett resumed the lead, and off they went.

Moving briskly, since no trouble had revealed itself, it took only about two hours to find the stai

e group where the light spell's radius ended. They had seen nothing but blue bricks above them, below them, beside them. Two rats scurried on by, but they were far from menacing, and even further from being cultists. Farther in, the familiar sound of a cascade resonated once more. Ultimately, they reached the other end of the culvert, and it was the same as from where they'd entered.

"Nothin'?!" Seanessy griped.

"Oh, for all that's, " Larson complained. "I don't want to get wet again."

They turned to Charlotte, who kept a fierce gaze. "We must be missing something."

"What gives you that idea?" Lyalla snipped.

"Shut up!"

"Ladies, " Fortha cautioned.

"Don't you lady me, " Lyalla rebutted and smacked his forearm.

He snatched away, acting as though he'd been injured. "The rats, " Larson gasped.

"What of them, " Garrett asked.

"They were dry, " he answered. "Maybe they came from inside the walls."

"They coulda' snuck past the water without gettin' too wet, " the dwarf commented.
