"That's why I'm here, meathead, " Charlotte jeered without opening her eyes.

"Oh, right, " Larson smiled. "I forgot about you."

"How dare you?!"

"How dare you, " he rebutted.

Sara laughed, and said, "I'll be back in a moment with roasted lamb and cider."

While she was leaving, Garrett tugged at Larson's cape. He gave a slight nod of the head as he eyed Charlotte, who was then glaring.

"Yeah, " Larson chuckled. "She's a peach…a peach of shite!"

"That's it!" She growled and kicked up off the ground to her feet in one, smooth motion.

"Charlotte!" Mathew called. "Stay calm. Larson…please don't provoke her, and anyway, yes, we need someone alive, and again, yes, Charlotte is here for precisely that task." As Mathew spoke, she fiddled with some of the pouches secured to her belt. "Charlotte doesn't simply specialize in breaking into homes and relieving people of their collections, she also specializes in, " he trailed off and looked her way.

"Just say it, poisons, " she chirped. "They're not deadly—I'm not a killer—but I have toxins that immobilize, cause short term memory loss, and even put people to sleep." She turned to Mathew with a beaming smile and added, "For the record; I could do this alone. I don't even know why you're sending these amateurs in. In the blink of an eye, I could scurry through the sewers, knock one of those cult guys out, and you could question him all you want."

Larson and Garrett both laughed to their utter dismay.

"And how would you grab this unconscious man, " Mathew posed. "You would walk up to him amid

, you are not joining us, " Lyalla asked.

"No. I must continue my efforts involving that teleportation spell. I think I will make a breakthrough soon, but if not, hopefully, our White Wraith companion-to-be will reveal some useful information."

"They're suicidal, lad, " Seanessy stated.

Mathew nodded knowingly. "This won't be easy…but you all know that already. Anyway, I'll be casting spells on your equipment. Eat, drink, rest, and gather your thoughts."

As they heeded his advice, ate lamb, drank cider, and tried to chat amicably, Mathew casted some special, protection spells on their clothing, their armor, even their travel packs. Beyond the simple, purple filigree that always appeared when Garrett casted his spell, Larson and gang were witness to other patterns; bluish triangles, reddish circles, various glows that flickered briefly before dying away. Upon being questioned, the detective admitted that there was no need to take risks; he was protecting them from various forms of magick such lightning, fire, ice, and poison.
