Lucas sat on the chair in the study room of his grandfather's mansion and rested his head backwards with eyes shut close. His legs were crossed and arms folded across his chest. He wasn't asleep. He was well conscious of his environment but today had been so hectic for him that he decided to thrust his head backwards and just take in the silence to clear his head for a bit. His grandpa was going to be okay. That was all he kept telling himself inwardly over and over again. The one and only person who cares about him was not going to leave him. He was going to make sure of that. He was going to give the old man the best treatment there is. It doesn't matter how much it might cost him, he was going to give it his all.

He could hear music. That sounded strange. He furrowed his eyebrows.

Why music?

He asked himself as he wondered if the strange music was in his head. He had never sort to hum or use any kind of music to soothe his thoughts. That was strange.

The tune played again and he gently flickered his eyes open. He could hear it coming from a certain direction. He listened attentively and finally turned his gaze to the direction it was coming from he got up from his seat and walked towards the sofa. He could hear the tune a bit louder than when he was back on his seat. It was definitely coming from below the sofa so he bent and put his hand under the sofa. He searched with his hand slowly for anything he might pick up and finally, he caught hold of something. He brought it out to his view. It was a cellphone which kept ringing. The name Chris was written on the caller ID which made him narrow his eyebrows and go into wondering whose phone this might be.

"...I just came for my cellphone which I forgot here last night."

He suddenly remembered Ema's words. He shut his eyes for a second. This wasn't happening. He couldn't believe that she must have been right and he wrong. He stared at the cellphone in his hand long and hard with Chris's name written as the caller.

He sighed.

"Chris." She called out his name surprised by his sudden presence.

"You...w-what are you doing here by this time?" She asked a bit nervous as she held on to the door, refusing to pave way for his entrance.

He maintained the smile on his face.

"Why? Am I not allowed to visit you?"

"Well..." She started but took one look behind her for any sign of her aunt and saw none so she quickly turned back to him. He noticed her reaction.

"Well it's just that we saw each other at work and..."

"Are you hiding something or perhaps... Someone?" Chris dared to ask as he narrowed his look at her.

"What!? No...N-no." She staggered but he kept his gaze on her. She quickly took one look behind her for any sign of her aunt possibly walking out of the bedroom. She couldn't have her meeting Chris. She was going to make a fuss about him and talk so much to her irritation plus her apartment was a mess. She wasn't used to having people over especially men so actually never really bothered about cleaning it up.

"It's nice that you decided to visit me but you really didn't have to come all the way here."

"I had to. I didn't see you for the rest of the day so I thought to pay you a visit and show you just how thoughtful your friend is. I even bought some groceries for you." Chris explained with the same smile on his face.

Ema smiled back as she took a look at the polythene bag in his left hand.

"That is very thoughtful of you but...but you really didn't have to."

"Don't tell me you're going to turn me back?" He sort of rhetorically asked.

"Uh...well..."

"Who do we have here?" Josephine asked as she interrupted Ema while trying to get her way past Ema and so succeeded.

Ema sighed as she stood to one side and let her aunt be.

Josephine gave a naughty smile with a mischievous look in her eyes.

"Hi I'm Chris and you must be the lovely aunt who just flew in." Chris buttered as he stretched his hand out to her to a handshake.

"Yes I am and thank you for calling me lovely. Aren't you a darling? I'm Josephine but you can call me Josie." She replied as she accepted his handshake.

She flashed Ema a smile.

"I'm going to go right ahead and assume you're my niece's boyfriend..."

"No, he's not!" Ema quickly answered before Chris could say anything.

"Chris and I are just friends. He came to drop off something and was just about to leave." Ema told her as she collected the polythene bag from Chris who just stood without saying a word.

"Bye." She told him with a single wave and a smile.

Her aunt snorted.

"Why should he leave? He just got here and you just said he's your friend. Let your friend come in and join us for dinner." Josephine explained as she looked at Ema whose expression slowly changed.

"What do you say Chris? Would you like to join us for dinner?" Josie asked him as she turned her gaze to him.

A sly smil

ng away. That obviously was what she wasn't expecting to hear. She scratched the back of her neck feeling a bit awkward.

"Okay, that's enough. You need to leave now." She told him as she gave him a light push away.

"Leave?" He asked her as he took a look at his wristwatch. It was too early for him to go home. After all, he was going to an empty and cold mansion.

"It's too early for me to leave. Why don't we go and get an ice cream?"

"Ice cream? No...I'm angry with you so just leave." She bluntly refused.

"Hmm...I clearly remember you telling me just how you were going to repay me for the rent. Let's say getting an ice cream with me is part of it." He told her with a mischievous look in his eyes and she just stared at him.

"You're a real sly fox, aren't you?" She asked him as she stared at him and he nodded with a smile.

She sighed before walking ahead of him.

"Where are you going?" He asked her as she kept walking.

"Where else? To get the ice cream of course. Are you coming or not?" She told him as she stopped and turned to him. A wider smile grew on his face before running to meet up with her and they walked off together.

Lucas sighed as he stared at the cellphone in his hand as he sat in his car. He wondered if he was doing the right thing. He had a lot of difficult deciding if he should do this. This was against everything he had done but somehow he managed to find himself here. He admitted that he was in the wrong. He might have acted a bit rational.

He looked up and out of the window to the building Ema lived in. The same place he dropped her off in the past. He parked on the side across the street from the building. This was probably a wrong idea. The worst he had ever decided on but somehow he just couldn't shake off the feeling that he had been wrong. He blamed her for doing something she probably didn't. She told the truth about having lost her phone in the study room but being himself, he just couldn't believe her. He took in a deep breath and tried to open the door when he noticed her approaching the building with Chris. He sat still staring at them as he slowly took his hand off the door. Chris was here. They seemed happy with an ice cream cone in their hands. He watched as they stood in front of her building. He couldn't hear what they were saying but gestures did enough to his understanding.

Ema smiled a bit lightly before pushing the entire cone into her mouth chewing at the same time. As if in a rush and somewhat smiled at interval at her action. Chris noticed a little bit of ice cream at the corner of her lips. She barely seemed to notice where his gaze was at.

Lucas, for some reason unknowingly stared attentively at them. Chris slowly stretched his hand to gently wipe off the ice cream at the corner of her mouth. Ema who was taken by surprise just stood still staring at him with wide eyes as she stopped chewing. Chris smiled at her without taking his eyes away from hers.

Lucas looked away from them. He suddenly felt stupid for no just reason for deciding to come here in the first place. He threw the phone on the seat beside him and without taking another look at them, he started the car and drove off.
