"What trinket?"

"Don't be foolish, " Cormick snarled and walked his mount right up to Garrett.

"You're the fool, here. How am I supposed to hand over something if I don't know what you want?"

In a flash, Cormick pulled a two-handed hammer from the side of his saddle and charged. The steel head caught Garrett in the chest, and he fell on his butt.

"That thing ya' took from the goblins!"

The fencer puffed and nodded to himself with a smirk. "Oh, that thing. I sold it."

Cormick hopped off his horse then. By the time he reached Garrett, the fencer had struggled to his feet. He rubbed his chest. The blow received was more for show than injury, but it had packed a wallop.

"Go back to your houses, folks, " Garrett ordered and quickly cast a protection spell. As soon as the glowing, purple filigree covered his form, he added, "This horse lover smells like trouble…and manure."

That brought chuckles from both the mercenaries and the citizens. Cormick's visage grew fierce; he stretched his lips back, baring his rotted teeth, his eyes opened wide, and he raised his hammer to strike, but a massive hand suddenly lurched out from the group of townsfolk and gripped the hammer's handle, so that when Cormick went to bring it down, it actually slipped his grasp.

"What the?" the mercenary leader gasped.

Hushed whispers passed through the crowd. Both Garrett and Cormick saw a large, imposing man with long, black hair was holding the hammer. Garrett recognized him from the Finagling Frog. The dwarves from the inn suddenly flanked their som

n you, too."

"I understand."

"He ees not to blayme, " the imposing man said to Ograk.

"Dolf, " Ograk asked. "You fight, too, eh?"

"Yeys. Ve tried to keep peace, but the scum, they attack the peeple."

Ograk nodded. She and Simon quickly quelled the situation. The healers, apothecaries, and priests, were doing their best to heal the wounded. It looked to Garrett that two, innocent people had died. He shook his head in impotence, rage, and disgust. He and Dolf met eyes for a moment. The dwarves had vanished without a trace. Finally, Ograk left Simon in charge and asked Dolf and Garrett to accompany her, three guards, Cormick, and two more mercenaries, to the barracks.

Glancing over his shoulder as he followed the guards, Garrett saw the wanton destruction caused by a mysterious trinket. The little skull was responsible for destruction to be sure, and Garrett fully understood that both the trinket and Lagos were going to be a recurrent problem. I need to learn what this thing is and just what Cormick knows about it.
