"Is this how your last apprentice died? You killed him?" Larson accused.

"Relax, " Holden demanded. "You're not in any danger."

"Then, untie me!"

"Why, so you can run off back to Barry's? I need you loud and still, so the wolf will come."

Larson hated the old man. He had been tricked, cajoled, manipulated, and all because he was a dumb boy seeking adventure, because he heard what he wanted to hear instead of the grim truth; that life is just work, family, and death. He vowed, swore, and promised that one way or another, he was getting loose, and that then both he and the wolf were going to feast on Holden. The old man laughed.

"Good, good, get your ire up. The werewolf will smell it and come to find you, " Holden laughed. "Now, I'm going to move a few paces from you. My cloak is magickal. If I remain still for a time, nothing can sense me…well, usually nothing, and I have this ring that lets me see in the dark, and I might add; your astonishment is hilarious. Oh, damn…."

"What?" Larson growled.

"I have to pee, " Holden mumbled.

"So pee."

"I can't. If I do, the werewolf will smell it."

"So, instead of approaching slowly and cautiously towards you, it'll feel offended and come after me."

"Good, " Larson snipped.

"I'll hold it, " Holden chuckled and moved off.

A moment went by during which Larson's mind reeled with thoughts of being mauled to death. This was the second time that he let the sit

g down his pants, up his tunic, and he was out of breath.

"I can see in the dark, dummy, " Holden said, helping Larson to his feet. "Stand up straight. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Relax. The body breathes on its own."

It took only a moment before Larson recovered. For whatever reason, he wasn't mad anymore, or even scared. He looked off into the darkness.

"Is it still here?" he whispered.

"You better believe it, boy, but it isn't happy. I jammed a silver dagger into its flank a couple times. There's no healing from that unless it eats, and we're the closest thing here. Stay sharp."

Larson threw his hands up in desperation, "Sharp? I can't even see."

"Take off, " Holden ordered.

"Run, boy!"

"Where?! I can't see!" Larson argued.

Holden laughed, and between spurts said, "First you wanted to run away because you were tied, now you're free and you wanna' stay. Make a decision and stick with it."
