The moon hung low in the sky. Dawn wasn't far and soon travel wouldn't be as freely done. A man, a tall, tall man took his hat from his head and wiped the beads of sweat from his forehead. Though it was a cool autumn night, he was uncommonly warm. For several hours he had silently followed a runaway girl. The girl was quiet and cautious. For any normal man, she would've been nearly impossible to follow. Thankfully, he was not an ordinary man. Though more challenging than following a person normally was, it was not difficult from him to stay close to the girl. She didn't even know he was following her. Casting another glance toward the sky, a small smile graced his handsome face. It wouldn't be long before she stopped for the night. She had planned this trip carefully, he was sure Lacey intended to hide during the day and travel by night. In some ways, such a plan was dangerous for a lone girl, but considering just what she was running from, the man decided she chose that safer option. It was clear to him that she intended to let no one or anything delay or stop her. Even so, he longed to stop her- not to take her back to her home. Oh no! He just wanted to make her stop and notice him. He longed to have her soft sweet eyes resting on his face, her hand clasped firmly in his as they ran from the prison her father had built around her.

Lacey nearly sighed as she saw the first strains of dawn lightening the sky. She was ever so tired. It was a wonder she had escaped the town without catching the attention of someone. Sure, she had hoped to, even planned on it, but she was still surprised at how easy her escape had been. Lily's escape had been a bit more complicated and she nearly d

ed his lips upward as he saw her peacefully sleeping. Kneeling, he eased his bag from his shoulder and withdrew a quilt that his dearly departed mother had made in her younger days. Easing himself down, he settled himself against the wall before leaning forward and pulling the small girl toward him. Moving her body so she was leaning comfortably against his side, he wrapped his arm around her and used his free hand to pull her cloak and the quilt around the both of them. Sighing peacefully in her sleep, Lacey unknowingly nuzzled her head against his broad chest. Smiling in contentment, the man finally allowed himself to rest. This is how he liked it. This sweet little dumpling wrapped up in his arms, her head on his chest. Her soft sighs breaking the silence every now and again. What man wouldn't smile in satisfaction? One day done and they were both safe and undetected. This might not be so bad after all, especially if this sweet cake was in the deal.
