The sun slowly disappeared, the birds flying away to their nests and family. A horse stood nearby happily munching on grass. River lifted her head, she was sitting on the ground leaning against a tree. She had no idea where she was or how she got here. Closing her eyes, she struggled to remember. What happened today? What was the last thing she remembered before waking up here? How long had she been sleeping against the tree?

Footsteps crunched in the leaves covering the ground. River tried to turn to see who was coming up behind her, but the ropes tying her to the tree made that rather difficult. She could hear men talking. The one man's voice sounded familiar. It was the voice that had haunted her nightmares for so many years. The voice belonged to Robert Krillan, the man who killed her parents. That voice sent fear rushing through her veins, she was terrified of the man. She pulled against the ropes but she was tied sunggly. How did she get here? When did they take her? River hated that she couldn't remember. Meanwhile, the men were drawing closer. Terrified of facing the killer, River dropped her head and closed her eyes. Hopefully they would think she was asleep and leave her alone.

"You clumsy oaf." Krillan growled. "If you would've been more careful they wouldn't know you took her in the first place!"

"I just hope the knock on the head didn't kill her. It's been nearly an hour and she's still out cold."

"Did you slap her around? Dump some water on her or something?" Krillan frowned as the rounded the tree and stared down at the unconscious girl.

"I did all that." Hefty snapped, "I'm not stupid. Nothing wakes her up though. That tree must've really got her."

"Did you get rid of my no good son and his deputy?"

"I think so. I

e gathered that men had chased after them and somehow she hit her head against a tree. That could explain why she couldn't remember what happened. She also learned that she had to get away from them before they sold her to a fate worse than death.

River wiggled and wiggled, slowly, the ropes loosened. It took a while but the ropes loosened just enough for her to wiggle under the ropes. Standing, she grabbed hold of the tree as a wave of dizziness overtook her. Must get away. Must get away. The words rattled around Rivers confused brain. Standing upright, she turned slowly to look at the sleeping men. They were out cold. She hoped there loud snores would cover any noise she might make as she escaped. Very carefully, she eased around the tree and started walking in the direction the men had come. She didn't know which way was home but she figured that was a good direction to start in. As long as she could get away from Krillan she would be safe. Must get away, must get away. The words pounded through her head with each step she took. Her throat and mouth was dry. She was dizzy and her head hurt so very much. Determined that her life depended on it, she walked on.
