The moment Mason slammed the door he knew he shouldn't have. He shouldn't have shoved her or yelled at her.

Part of his mind was overwhelmed. The other part was just lost. His mom had been such a steadying focus in his life. Even when she was so sick she still took the effort to listen, to guide, to love.

And now. There was nothing. No smiles, no laughs, no mom. She would never again yell at him for wearing his work boots inside. She wouldn't complain about his unsavory cooking attempts. She wouldn't ask about his day. She wouldn't tell him about his dad anymore.

Mason slid down the door until he sat facing the lonely living room. The house was silent, the only sound being that of the grandfather clock. The grandfather clock that his dad built and gave to his mom for their eighth wedding anniversary.

Mason remembered that morning. After smothering his dad's face with kisses, she pulled her rocking chair in front of the clock and just watched the pendulums move. Every tim

was a man in deep pain, a man who had no light. I moved forward and wrapped my arms around him. Something told me before I did it that he wouldn't push me away, and I was right. He hugged me back, squeezing me tightly. It felt like he was sobbing, but I didn't care. Tears cleansed the soul and right now Mason needed it.
