"Who are you?"

Mason tried to smile, he was afraid it came out more like a grimace. How much would this girl remember? Would she remember being attacked? "Hon, did you hit you head or anything? Did they hurt you?"

The girl shook her head slowly. Mason was sure she was shaking it not in answer to his question but to try and clear her head a bit. The girl seemed rather confused and disoriented. Of course, waking up in a stranger's car could do that to you. He remained silent, determined to allow her to set the pace of their conversation.

"I don't f-feel like I'm h-h-hurt anywhere." She said after several long seconds of tense silence.

Mason let out a relieved breath. "Well, that's good. You might have hit your head when you fell. Do you have a headache? Any odd bumps on the head."

Mason waited silently as she seemed to take inventory. "I feel fine." She insisted. "Though I wish I knew who you were or why I'm in your car."

"You don't remember anything?" Maybe she wasn't as fine as he thought.

"I remember walking home from work. Then their were some men leaning against the wall. I didn't notice them until-oh!" She turned rather sharply to him. "I haven't been k-kidnapped have I?"

Mason knew he shouldn't but he really couldn't help himself. He burst into a loud gut-shaking laughter. The poor kid didn't really know what to make of his laughter, so she sat quietly and waited for him to answer her.

"Darlin', I haven't ever kidnapped anybody and I didn't decide to start today. I was only driving home from work when I saw you laying on the sidewalk. By the time I got to you, there was nobody around. Only you."

The girl seemed to flush a bit as she looked down. The poor kid was probably embarrassed. Mason shouldn't have laughed at her, but it had been pretty funny. Here he sat asking her if she was alright and she accused him of kidnapping her. "Hey, are you warm enough? I have a blanket in the backseat. It's one of those scratchy wool ones but it gets you pretty warm."

"I am k-kinda c-c-cold."

Mason reached in the backseat and retrieved the blanket. He talked steadily as he wrapped it around her shoulders. "It is a blasted cold night for September. I don't remember it ever being so cold. We're likely to have snow come morning. There now, that'll keep you warm. Now, where can I take you? I imagine you haven't eaten. We can go back to my place and I can fix you something or I can take you to your place and fix you something. Your choice, baby."

"M-my apartment is just a couple seconds from here." She chattered.

"Sure thing. Brookline?"

"Y-yes."

"Better pull that blanket up to your chin, sugar. Your lips are gonna turn blue."

She pulled the blanket up and snuggled into it closing her eyes. Mason reached out and turned the fan speed up to high.

Mason maintained silence until he parked in the lot reserved for Brookl

ine apartments. He got out and walked around to her side. Holding the door open he told her to keep the blanket wrapped around her. "It'll help keep the wind off you." Hurrying her to the door, he held the door open and gestured her inside.

"Which apartment is yours?"

"Thirty four A."

They made short work of climbing the stairs and soon found themselves at her apartment door. She released her hold on the blanket to fumble her way through her purse, looking for her key.

Mason waited patiently, praying that she still had a key.

He watched as she set her purse down on the floor and started checking her pockets. He was beginning to panic. If those hoodlums had her key she would have to have all her locks changed. His relieve was almost visible when she found the key in the left front pocket of her jeans.

"After you." He said as she unlocked the door and swung it open. He followed her inside and closed the door behind him. Mason's first impression of her apartment was that it's very clean. There wasn't a whole lot of stuff cluttering up floor space or surfaces. The apartment appeared to be three rooms. A kitchen, a living room, and a bathroom. He couldn't see what was in the kitchen, but the living room contained only a sofa, side stand, a six shelf bookcase and a radio. No pictures adorned the walls. There were no rugs. Or vases full of flowers. Mason was rather surprised by the sparseness of it all. He made his way into the kitchen. The only sign of life in this room was the toaster that sat on the counter next to the sink.

Mason returned to the living room to find the girl watching him. "Umm, were you robbed?"

She might have cracked a smile, he wasn't sure. Regardless, she shook her head.

"Right, well. You go take a shower and change and I'll make something that will sustain you for a few hours."

"Don't burn my apartment down."

Mason just smiled as he sauntered back into the kitchen. He opened several cabinets. Wow. This girl put simple to an all new level. Throughout every cabinet and the mini fridge he found only an organic box of macaroni and cheese, a snickers bar (found in the fridge), two lemons, and a can of coffee. Well, at least it wouldn't be hard to decide what to have for dinner. Pulling out a pot he found in the oven, he carefully measured out water and flicked the burner on. He could hear the water from the bathroom shut off. Mason walked from the kitchen and studied the living room again. "Well..." He turned in a slow circle. "It can't be hard to keep this apartment clean."
